WEST MILFORD A large-scale volunteer clean-up day is taking place at the former Jungle Habitat property on Saturday, Nov. 19. The aim to open the interior pathway system that originally traveled throughout the various safari compounds on the hillside. Thirty years of neglect and overgrowth has kept these pathways and trails from being enjoyed by the public. Members of the Ramapo Valley Cycling Club and Jersey Off-Road Bicycle Association (JORBA) have joined forces to tidy up the trails and then maintain the multi-use trails for the enjoyment of outdoor enthusiasts. The clean-up is co-sponsored by Town Cycle of West Milford and Trek Bicycle. The session will include removal of brush, deadfall and leaves from paved pedestrian paths, as well as general clean-up of rubbish and unsafe remnant structures. As of today mountain biking, hiking, hunting, equestrian, XC skiing and snowshoeing etc. are all legal uses on the 800 acre property under the stewardship of the Ringwood State Parks System. This day is an opportunity to work in conjunction with Ringwood State Park System and local trail advocacy organizations to help develop a trail network in West Milford. This will help ensure a future for the park to be open to residents and visitors alike offering a nearby outdoor escape and a glimpse into the parks stories from the past. Volunteers are welcome and needed. Wear weather appropriate work clothes, boots/sturdy work shoes and utility gloves. Hike or bike to the work-sites. The main gates will be open to allow driving access to staging area at the top lot. Snacks and beverages will be provided as well as give-aways from Trek Bicycles and other sponsors for volunteer participants.
