WEST MILFORD Sara Steele, 17, a recent graduate of West Milford High School, has been chosen as one of 135 winners of a James E. Casey Scholarship, presented by the UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. Established in 1964, the Casey Scholarship is named for one of the founders of UPS who, along with several other teenagers, started a small Seattle, Washington messenger service in 1907. More than 2,714 Casey Scholarships have been awarded. The scholarships range from $8000 to $24,000 over four years of undergraduate study. Winners are determined through a nationwide competition conducted by the independent National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Steele, daughter of Robert Steele, a Facility Planning Manager at a UPS facility in Mahwah, will attend Columbia College at Columbia University in the fall. She graduated high school with a 4.48 grade point average, was awarded a National Merit Scholarship and was a member of the National Honor Society. She also received a New Jersey Scholar award and participated as a delegate at the National Young Leaders Conference. Established in 1951, the UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its support will clearly impact social issues. In addition to the Casey Scholarship program, the UPS Foundation’s major initiatives currently include programs that support hunger relief, family and workplace literacy, and increased global volunteerism.
