WEST MILFORD The Super Bowl is more than a game to Mr. Antonucci and his sixth grade class at the Maple Road School; it’s a learning experience. It begins in September when his students form groups and pick their teams. This is done during the first weeks of the NFL games. The students selected teams they think will go all the way to the Super Bowl. The students follow their teams and record the statistics during the season. The figures they use include the number of touchdowns, passing yards, rushing totals, field goals and win-loss records. They use their math and computer skills to make charts and graphs to show the statistics they gather through out the season. This year the students had to use their language arts skills when recording and writing about the history of their teams. At the conclusion of the project, the sixth grade class held a tailgate party and invited the other students in the school to attend. The students used this as an opportunity to share their information through the use of graphs posters and verbal explanations. They showed how math is used in sports today, and enjoyed a variety of Super Bowl snacks.
