WEST MILFORD — Sean and Ann Kane aim to provide a well-rounded wellness center. They are the owners of West Milford Physical Therapy located at 2024 Macopin Road and 179 Cahill Cross Road, in business since August of 1988. They met in school at State University of New York, Stoneybrook and graduated together in 1983. Both interned at Duke Medical Center in North Carolina. Their first jobs were in Rockland County, New York; Sean in Good Samaritan, Ann in Nyack Hospital. After moving to the Awosting section of West Milford, they opened their own practice. They started in a small 650 square foot facility in West Milford and expanded to a 2,000 square foot building by 1992. Sean tributes much of their early growth to joining the West Milford Chamber of Commerce and pairing with local business. In 2004 they opened a new location in the Bald Eagle Commercial Building. In additional to offering traditional physical therapy, this satellite provides ancillary fitness and weight management programs. The Kanes have found over the years that as insurance coverage has decreased, the needs of the patients have not. Therefore, the reasons for this sort of facility is to provide assistance and guidance after physical therapy to promote continued fitness and long term health. In March 2005, both the Kanes became certified weight management instructors in response to the growing concerns about obesity and poor nutrition. This weight management program begins with a 60 minute one-on-one consultation with a certified licensed therapist. A 10 minute assessment of resting metabolic determines how many calories an individual burns at rest. This number will help the professional calculate the persons target calorie rate. The second part of this program is to set specific calorie burning goals through participation in eight sessions of a custom exercise program under the supervision of a physical therapist. The program is designed to be the spring board for exercise in a gym or home setting, ultimately resulting in a overall improved fitness level. After 18 years of service in the town of West Milford, the Kanes have continued to grow with the needs of the community. Susan Cagney, an occupational therapist, brings her expertise in specific hand rehabilitation and pediatric physical therapy to the business. In conjunction with their comprehensive physical therapy services, weight management programs and general fitness instruction, they provide a well rounded wellness center. They take most insurances.
