West Milford — For the second consecutive year, the West Milford High School’s Model United Nations team dominated the annual St. Peter’s College High School Model UN Conference, on March 7 and 8, by winning twelve awards. They competed with several high schools from the northern New Jersey area. The team members had the opportunity to represent the delegations of South Korea and the Russian Federation where their objectives were to debate current issues affecting the world, while trying to pass resolutions through several committees to resolve these issues. West Milford’s team was responsible in passing 3 out of the possible 6 resolutions completed on the last day of the conference. The advisor of Model UN and United States History II teacher, Greg Matlosz said, “I really have to give credit to this year’s juniors as they consistently motivated the new members of the team. I purposely placed the new members of Model UN with the juniors at this conference to prepare them for the future and to understand the politics of Model UN at these conferences.” The West Milford Model UN Team will attend the UNA-USA Model United Nations Conference on May 17-19 in New York City. Over 2,000 students will attend this conference from the United States, China, and several countries from the European continent where these students will actually have the opportunity to debate international policies in the UN headquarters. “Our students will be sitting in the official Security Council and General Assembly rooms, debating students from around the world,” said Matlosz. “I have to thank the West Milford Education Foundation for providing our team with a grant to help with the cost of this conference.” West Milford High School will be representing the delegations of Latvia (Eastern Europe) and Mali (Africa), and they will have to try to solve topics such as the AIDS crisis in Africa and global warming.
