West Milford - On Sunday March, 2, township resident Sandy Rabe, 48, suffered a heart attack and died at home while working on her computer. At the time of her death, she was the primary caretaker of her mother, who is legally blind and suffers from congestive heart failure, her 10-year-old son who is learning disabled, and 5-year-old daughter who has an autism-spectrum disorder. Sandy also worked part time as a cleaner to contribute to the family income. Mark Rabe, the father, has been a postal worker for more than 12 years and frequently worked overtime, struggling to make ends meet. Because of his 50 to 60 hour weekly work schedule, he was not involved in the day to day domestic activities. Since Sandy’s death Mark has had to take on all of the family’s responsibilities- everything from housework to financial management to walking the dog. His mother-in-law has since been very ill, necessitating her move from the hospital to a nursing home. Mark has been faced with putting the children in day care for the first time in order to go back to work. He earns too much money to qualify for subsidies of any kind and too little to be able to afford this new strain on the budget. His daughter requires very specialized care which is not easy to obtain. Mark and Sandy’s son is a student at Paradise Knoll and their daughter is a student at Maple Road in the New Beginnings program. Mark is a loving father, very committed to caring for his children, but needs whatever support can be provided to be successful. In an effort to alleviate some of the financial burden that has befallen Mark Rabe and his family a fundraiser is being held on Sunday, May 18 (raindate Wednesday, May 21, 2008) in West Milford. “Family Fun Day” will be held at Bubbling Springs on Macopin Road from 1 to 7 p.m. There will be musical entertainment provided by “The EFN Blues Band,” as well as a puppet show, hair and face painting, tattoos and other children’s games. Refreshments will be available for purchase and admission is $10 per car. Please consider donating to this family who has been dealt a very difficult hand. No donation is too small, any help that Mark and his family receive is greatly appreciated. Checks may be made payable to: Mark Rabe Send c/o Jeannine Mooney and Kristin Nevin 2 Vanessa Court, West Milford, New Jersey 07480.
