WEST MILFORD — West Milford Rotary is one of fifty clubs spanning Passaic, Bergen and Hudson Counties forming a Rotary District, specifically District 7490. Each Rotary District annually elects a District Governor, a most prestigious and responsible position. The District Governor will visit each and every club during the first half of his or her term of office. This equates to visiting two clubs a week. As one can see the position of District Governor requires quite a bit of commitment in terms of both time and possible investments in Rolaids. On September 19, District Governor Gloria Counsellor visited the West Milford Club. In a personal letter to Club President Glenn Gross, Governor Counsellor congratulated the West Milford Rotary Club as being one of the most active within the district, noting the club’s extraordinary involvement to its community. As the old adage goes, practice makes perfect and the West Milford Rotary Club has served its community for 47 years. The club kicked off its 48th year of service with its second annual Christmas in July held at the VanDyk Home on July 27. Despite heat, humidly and a thunderstorm over 100 residents packed the social hall to enjoy the entertainment highlighted by an updated rendition of Abbott and Costello’s classic Who’s on First routine as performed by two teens of the club’s membership. No Rotary Christmas is complete without a visit from the club’s somewhat unique Santa Claus. A splendid time was had by one and all. The club’s “Rotarian of the Month” program is to honor individual members by making a donation to that member’s charity or service organization of choice. The club recently honored two Rotarians with donations to The Childhood Cancer Society and The M.I.S.S. Foundation. The Childhood Cancer Society is headed up by a local high school teenager whose mission is to assist children (and their families) with cancer and similar diseases. The M.I.S.S. Foundation is a volunteer organization offering support to those who have lost children, usually to stillborn, SIDS or other childhood diseases. The club also made its annual donations to the township’s volunteer first aid squads. The West Milford Rotary Club is preparing for its next major program, Career Day at West Milford High School on November 7. Representatives of various professions, occupations and trades will donate their time to speak to the students of West Milford. All those participating in the Career Day are also guests of Rotary for luncheon at The Town Tavern in West Milford. The West Milford Career Day is regarded by many educators as the finest in all New Jersey. Anyone interested in learning more about Rotary can contact the club’s publicity director, Alan Edelstein at (973) 697-1213. West Milford Rotary meets on Tuesday’s, 12:15 p.m. at Village Square Inn on Route 23.
