Will that be cash, check ... or charge?

Township now accepting online credit and debit card payments for taxes West Milford - The Township of West Milford is making it easier for residents to pay their taxes on time. With first quarter property taxes due by Feb. 10, the Township’s new online option may save folks some late fees as well. For the first time, residents can log onto the Township’s Web site - www.westmilford.org - and pay their taxes online, using either a credit card or a debit card. Credit card payments will be assessed a 2.5 percent fee. There is no fee when using a debit card. West Milford’s tax collector, Rita DeNivo, said the new system was implemented less than three weeks ago and already she has received 30 online payments. The system is pretty straight-forward. First, log onto the Township’s website. On the left side of the page, select “Online Payments”; then “Online Tax Payment.” A screen with a summary of all the steps necessary to complete the transaction comes up. To begin the process, click on “Begin Tax Payment.” All of the information you need to pay your taxes can be found on your tax bill. The first screen asks for either your account number or the block and lot number along with the taxpayer’s last name. Enter the information and your tax bill will appear. Choose your method of payment - credit card or debit card - and confirm the amount to be paid. Taxpayers may only pay the full amount due for the quarter. No partial payments are accepted, although that is something DeNivo would like to see changed. “Some people would like to pay in advance, in monthly payments,” said DeNivo. “Sometimes people don’t have the full amount. I would like to change that.” She will look into making that change to the system after this first quarter closes. After confirming the amount to be paid as well as accepting the terms and conditions of the transaction, you are asked to enter contact information. Another confirmation screen will appear with all details of the transaction, including payment information. If you confirm the transaction, it will be processed and you will receive a receipt screen and, if you input an E-mail address, a receipt will be sent. If you change your mind, this is where you can back out of the transaction. It’s that easy. People have requested a credit card option for various reasons. Some would like to get the rewards that come with some credit cards. Others want the convenience of making the transaction online. Still others will use it to help them make their payment on time and avoid the late fee. For just a little while longer, residents may also pay their 2008 property taxes online. The Township accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express cards.
