JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP New Jersey weather has certainly been erratic of late with spring-like temperatures one day and freezing cold and snow another. Even though spring fever seems to flip flop with cabin fever this winter, it is time for the seventh annual Jefferson Township Winterfest event. This event is scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 2006 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road in the Lake Shawnee section of the township. All activities are free, although there will be a nominal fee for refreshments. Jefferson Township Recreation Department has planned an afternoon filled with activities inside and outside for all age groups including a bonfire, sledding, and ice skating (activities will, however, depend on weather conditions). In addition, the Jefferson Township Public Library will host two story times for children one at 2 p.m. and another at 3 p.m. in the Community Lodge. There will be free hot chocolate and cookies for the children during their story time session. For the fourth year in a row, the recreation department will seek donations for a food bank collection to assist in stocking the township’s food pantry for the needy. Those attending Winterfest are asked to bring a non-perishable food item especially canned tuna or meats, soups, beef stew, corned beef hash, peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, non-refrigerated canned/bottled juices, canned or powdered milk, cereal, and crackers. Also needed are paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, etc. Get rid of the winter blues by gathering up your family and friends along with your ice skates, sleds, and snow tubes and celebrate winter at Camp Jefferson. There will be absolutely no snowboarding or skiing permitted, and a parent/guardian must accompany children under 14 years of age. In the event of very inclement weather, the Winterfest will be rescheduled for Saturday, February 25.
