Young man drowns at Ocawasin

    WEST MILFORD —The West Milford Township Police Department is investigating the drowning death of a 23 year old Clifton man. The incident occurred on Sunday in Lake Hird which is a five-acre lake on the grounds of Camp Ocawasin. Camp Ocawasin is located at 625 Macopin Rd. Miguel Alvarado, 23, of 76 East Sixth St. in Clifton was pronounced dead at 09:15 hours after his body was recovered from the lake by members of the West Milford Police Underwater Recovery Team. Alvarado and several friends and a family member had rented cabins at the camp. After socializing around a camp fire, Alvarado, his girlfriend and another friend went out onto the lake in a canoe. About 75-100 yards from shore Alvarez stood up, causing the canoe to capsize. Responding to screams for help, other members of the party were able to reach the canoe by boat and rescue the female. The other male occupant of the canoe swam in towards shore and was assisted by friends. Alvarado disappeared under the water and despite a frantic search by other members of his party, could not be located. The West Milford Police Department received a 911 call advising that a boat had capsized at Camp Ocawasin with victims in the water at 03:04 hrs. Ptl. Pesenti and Ptl. Tomaschek were immediately dispatched to the scene. Arriving minutes later, the officers were met by friends and a family member of the victim. Police were advised that the victim had been out in a canoe with two others when the canoe capsized. Ptl. Tomaschek went out in a boat with a friend of the victim. Upon reaching the capsized canoe, he found it upright but filled with water. Ptl. Tomaschek continued searching for the victim until relieved by members of the Apshawa Fire Department who responded with two rescue boats. The search continued for a period of time until it was called off for safety reasons. The Police Underwater Recovery Team reentered the lake when there was sufficient day light, The victim was located and recovered a short time later. At this time the incident is still under investigation by the West Milford Police Department Detective Bureau. There appears to be no foul play involved. The death of Miguel Alvarez appears to be accidental with alcohol consumption being a contributing factor.
