About gun violence

To the editor: Watching the latest installment of the evening news I noticed a report on a tragic shooting. A youth shot two young girls then killed himself in Arizona. In an interview on the matter a local politician said it came down to gun control. “Something has to be done on the federal level,” she said — as if more laws could be passed that would prevent a tragedy like this one. This young kid flipped out and could have executed his grisly crime in many ways, including the use of knives, common household cleaners, baseball bats, or the most common killer of young people, the automobile. People want to believe that somewhere, somehow, someone could make it all stop and I can’t blame them, but I think the message is clear — murderers do not care about the law! They will get any weapon they can to execute their brutal deeds. It is the law-abiding citizen who needs to be armed and trained to use a weapon so there will be no more victims without fighting back. It has been proven that in most crimes, just the act of brandishing a gun by a law-abiding citizen is enough to end the confrontation. We the people need to stand up and send the message to our lawmakers that we are tired of criminals with long rap sheets who commit crimes and are constantly let out in our neighborhoods, while a law-abiding citizen in this state has to kneel down and kiss the ring of the governor to be able to own a handgun. And you can’t carry one for protection at all. How many more murders do we need? If the good guys could shoot back, how many would still be alive today? Eric Bunk West Milford
