After the election

To the editor: The election results are now known, but as of this writing, the campaigning was still in progress and our new council members were not yet chosen. That being said, after weeks of writing letters, a few words to the candidates seem in order. Joe and Sal (Smolinski and Schimmenti) were the incumbent and the doctor ... with name recognition and the backing of the majority party. These candidates lacked my support primarily because of their party affiliation. In my (disgruntled Republican) opinion, the Republican Party in West Milford has become too domineering and too focused on special interests. Its leaders, vocal members, or more prominent members have taken actions that are malicious, dishonest, ignorant, self-serving and/or petty. Furthermore, over the years, I have spoken to Republican councilmen regarding the basis for some of their decisions — decisions that seemed illogical or took me by surprise. They have told me, “I wasn’t allowed to vote that way,” or “the Party made me do it.” This is an ideology that I refuse to support and indeed, find rather repulsive and appalling For these reasons, Joe and Sal were neither supported nor criticized by me. I explained my position to them and they seemed quite understanding. They both stated that they are men of their own and not partisan in nature. My hope is that these were not empty words. So, if either of you won, stand by your promises, keep your minds open to new or non-Republican ideas, and be “men of your own” rather than “party boys.” Jim and James (Geist and Rauth) were the underdogs ... the unknowns from the minority party. If either of you won, be strong as you plunge into the world of politics. There will inevitably be accusations and personal attacks made against you. Remember too, that every vote will receive its share of criticism. No vote can possibly please everyone ... someone will always be dissatisfied. If you did not obtain a seat on the council, be proud that you tried to make a difference and that you remained civil and honest throughout the process. Congratulations and good luck to the winners, whoever you are. Remember that as councilmen, your focus is on the protecting the entire community and meeting the needs of the entire community. Do this with integrity and you can’t go wrong. Bettina Bieri West Milford
