To the editor: Speeding on Warwick Turnpike and the roads that intersect it have been a problem for Mount Laurel residents for some time. The West Milford Police do an admirable job in enforcing the speed limit. The police, however cannot be everywhere 24 hours a day. This brings me to an incident I had with now West Milford Council candidate James C. Geist. My home is visible from Warwick Turnpike. Anyone driving can just slightly turn their head and view my front yard and house. I have two daughters ages 8 and 6. The speeding problem always bothered me but it really started to gain my attention when my daughters were playing outside. Whether on a big wheel, bicycles, or chasing a ball combined with the speeding can add up to a parents worst nightmare. I could not always go out into the street and slow people down. One day in the parking lot where I work in Manhattan, I asked Louie one of the custodians if I could have one of those big orange barrels used on construction sites. Louie said “ Help yourself,” so I did. In the spring of 2005, Candidate Geist sent me a memo. Instead of putting it illegally in my home mailbox, (as he has done with other correspondences) he gave it to me at work. I still keep all his correspondences to this day. However, in this particular memo, he accuses me of stealing the barrel. He then threatens to call WM DPW, or as he put it “they appreciate anonymous tips” meaning that he would call and report me. All this from former “Minister Geist” our council candidate. Candidate Minister Jim never thought of the paternal reasons why I kept the barrel just outside my driveway. It wasn’t blocking traffic, it was just forcing people to slow down. I continue to do it to this day. Is this the character we want from a council candidate? Minister Jim. Choose forgiveness and forget vendetta. If not, I suggest you read your Bible. Gian P. Severini Hewitt
