To the editor, Your story about the West Milford Sunshine Act, (Sunshine Act to see light of day despite opposition’, by Terry McGahan, Friday, August 11, ), may leave readers with the mistaken impression that I alone collected all of the required signatures for the petition. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that a bipartisan group of people collected most of the signatures, including Bettina Bieri, Kathleen Caren, James Geist, James Rauth, CarLa Horton, Doris Aaronson, Councilman Robert Nolan and myself. While the Democratic Club is sponsoring the West Milford Sunshine Act, I think your readers should know that Ms. Bieri, is a registered Republican who has given countless hours to the township as a volunteer. Ms. Caren, Ms. Aaronson and Ms. Horton also have worked tirelessly as volunteers for the township and Mr. Geist and Mr. Rauth are the Democratic candidates vying for town council seats that will be contested in the November general election. There is another point that may be confusing to your readers. Your story refers to our use of the initiative/referendum process as “unprecedented.” I wish that were true but it isn’t. Indeed, the Republicans used the same process in 2003 when they circulated a petition that led to a costly special election and the change in the form of government to partisan. As most residents of the township will agree, the change of our form of government has benefited only a handful of Republicans. On the other hand, the West Milford Sunshine Act will make our municipal government more transparent and will benefit everyone in the township. Andrew Gargano West Milford
