To the editor: I enjoyed a recent article published in the Messenger on February 9 about the Utopia Deli located on Warwick Turnpike in Upper Greenwood Lake. I usually stop in there for a cup of coffee and the morning newspapers, as their coffee is excellent, as is their sandwiches and other food. However, as outlined in the article, I agree with owners Sue Contanza and Donald Diekert that the intersection in front in the deli, namely Warwick Turnpike and Lakeshore Drive, is a very dangerous intersection. This is a major intersection with no traffic controls at all. On a weekday morning, the cars waiting on Lakeshore Drive are sometimes backed up 15 cars deep. A driver turning left or right from Lakeshore Drive, in his or her rush to make the turn, may be inclined to not look both ways on Warwick Turnpike before turning, causing an accident if a car is coming up or down Warwick Turnpike too close to the car exiting Lakeshore Drive. Some drivers, in order to save some time, cut through on the service road that runs behind the old Pioneer Bar across the street from the deli, adding to the free for all on weekday mornings. Exiting from the Utopia is even worst. I am never sure if I, when exiting right from the deli, have the right of way, or if cars making a left from Lakeshore Drive on the other side of the intersection from the entrance to the deli have the right of way. If a driver is making a left from the deli, a telephone pole is in the way, obstructing the driver’s view. A light or some other means of traffic control is needed at this intersection. It is most dangerous on weekday mornings, but is dangerous at any time of the day. Robert J. Bailey Hewitt
