Don't forget - May is mental health month

To the editor: Take a good long look at yourself. No, not at the outside — look at the inside. Who are you? What have you become? Are you happy, or at least content? Are you overwhelmed, stressed, angry? I’m not talking about your mood today — I’m talking about who you are most days. How long have you been feeling the way you do most days? Think about it. Give it a name. That is what you have become. I have just one more question. Is it working for you? Not to sound like Dr. Phil, but it’s a telling question. Either it’s working or it’s not. The truth is, there are people all over the world who have lost their way. They have become stressed people, or sad people, or angry people, just because they have not really paid much attention to their mental health recently. We are all so obsessed with how things appear on the outside, that we allow the inside to remain our little secret, long overdue for some maintenance. The end result is a whole lot of people who could be happier. Three quarters of all mental illnesses go undiagnosed. I am not necessarily endorsing a full psychological workup. Simply tell your own doctor or call a local mental health agency. Not ready for that? That’s okay. Then simply clip this column, post it on the fridge, vow to pay more attention to your mental well being. Give May is Mental Health Month a chance to work its power on you. Take a moment to think about who you are, who you have become, and who you truly wish to be. Then, as soon as you’re ready, make it happen.
