To the editor: Why elect Councilman Joseph Smolinski and Dr. Sal Schimmenti? These two dedicated individuals have made positive strides and contributions to the, quality of life in West Milford. Both have demonstrated pride, leadership, concern, and hard work in the community. Their volunteerism runs deep. They have not hesitated to jump in wherever and whatever necessary without seeking praise or recognition for their efforts. They have never stopped to get a thank you or a pat on the back, but just say, okay, what’s next? Both of these men are devoted dads and husbands involved in numerous activities throughout the township. Councilman Joe Smolinski and his wife Bunny, a WM Board of Education School Bus Driver, have lived in West Milford for 20 years. Joe has been a self-employed businessman for 30 years. They are active parishioners of St. Joseph’s Church. Their daughter Jenny is a WMHS graduate and currently serves in the US Naval Reserve. Their son, Joseph, is a WMHS student, a Pipe Sargent, and class officer, among other pursuits. Joe is a member of the First A\d Squad, just celebrating 15 years as a member. He is credited for starting the fund drive providing defibrillators to West Milford Public Schools at no cost to taxpayers. He is a former Little League and Girls’ softball coach. He is an honorary PBA member of local 261, and a certified EMT for the state of NJ. He was a volunteer caring for ground zero rescue workers after the 9/11 attacks. He worked along with WM Fire officials to establish a pension plan for Fire and Medical volunteers of West Milford. Dr. Sal Schimmenti, his wife Sandra and their three sons, Joseph, Salvatore, and Alexander are parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace. The boys attend Macopin Middle School and Westbrook School and are involved in various sports and activities in the township. Dr. Sal is a Chiropractor owning his own business in town, and resident of West Milford for 16 years. His wife, Sandra, works for the State Department of Taxation. He has been involved in scouting as committee chair for Pack 9 Cub Scouts. He has assisted, supported, and been actively involved in various sports and activities in the township for children as well as seniors. He is a member of the West Milford Health Department Advisory Board, MUA, and CASA (Communities Against Substance Abuse). Dr. Schimmenti has also volunteered his time and services for the Senior Olympics. Both Councilman Smolinski and Dr. Schimmenti want to make West Milford a place for affordable retirement. Both are strongly dedicated to the children and senior residents of WM for safety, education, and recreation. Both volunteered their time in the rejuvenation of the Jungle Habitat Property for the enjoyment of all WM residents. As members of the Parks and Recreation advisory board, they are proponents in the purchase and building of parks and recreational fields for WM residents of all ages to enjoy at no cost to taxpayers and want to improve and make township facilities safer. They have been involved in the Creative Playground in both a hands on capacity and in fundraising. Their list of contributions goes on endlessly. I am very proud to have worked so closely with these two individuals. They are involved not for recognition, but because they want to do what is right for the community. I have witnessed their tireless volunteering efforts and involvement in township events such as Thunder in the Highlands, the Autumn Lights Festival, and The Cole Brothers Circus. They have given 100 percent of themselves without question or reservation. These two gentlemen are the heart and soul, the driving force, the grass roots in protecting the residents and future of West Milford. They bring dignity, honesty, intelligence, and respect to the community. Let’s continue to create a community we are proud to call home. On June 6, please join me in voting Row A. A vote for Councilman Joe Smolinski and Dr. Sal Schimmenti is a vote for a better West Milford. Republicans and Undeclared can cast their votes for these two gentlemen. This primary vote is important to all of us. Carmelo Scangarello West Milford
