To the Editor: It is detestable beyond words to watch the latest wave of corruption and indictable offenses sweep through the halls of Congress, our state government and even seep into our local town councils and freeholder boards. Greed and arrogance that says “I won’t be caught.” Now no party and no political philosophy. You can forget about an apology, or a mea culpa, or any sense of shame that would lead to a immediate resignation and prompt restitution for what has occurred. Instead, we have unelected county and state party chairmen running the government from behind the scenes; public officials who refuse to resign and stubbornly ensconce themselves in their elected offices behind a plethora of “no comments” and bland denials of wrongdoing by any number of feckless defense attorneys who bill by the hour with camera time included. You can forget about the good and decent people who could make a difference and improve the general welfare, if they were allowed to run. If they haven’t got oodles of money and political connections, they might as well resign themselves to watching helplessly from the sidelines. You can forget about true leaders and visionaries coming top the fore. You will only see political hacks and relatives and best friends feeding at the public trough. You can forget about involving young people in this process in the years to come. Their attitude will be outright cynicism leavened with ennui and disgust. So this is finally what this great country has come to. I feel betrayal. I feel revulsion. I feel disgust. Gerard F. Keogh, Jr. West Milford
