It has to stop somewhere

To the editor: There seems to be an interesting set of revelations coming forth in recent weeks concerning expenditures by the township. In the light of the election results, they take on an added nuance, to be sure. The first concerns the discovery of a pay out to settle a lawsuit that had been filed against the school district by a former employee. First, we are told that the settlement was sealed and confidential. Then a prominent town personality files a lawsuit to force the release of pertinent facts and suddenly, a figure between $20,000 and $23,000 is bandied about. If the settlement is confidential, then why was that breached by the statement from a board member to your paper. If it was not, then why was it treated as such? It is a pay out of taxpayer money that demands an explanation by the appropriate parties involved to my satisfaction and the other taxpayers who live here in town. The second might even be more suspect. There is a story that an all volunteer group that has had no compunction about letting everyone know about all their good works and their volunteerism is going to approach the town council for a sum of $8,000 to hire a lawyer. Hire a lawyer for what? Are they being sued? Are they suing someone or some entity that we are not cognizant of? They are a private organization and they have no right to sue anyone with our money. Let them sue with their money. One of their prominent members is well connected with the Republican party in this town. If his and their volunteerism are of such import to this town, then let him and his put up the money or come out publicly and make a compelling case as to why we should pay their legal bills. In case they haven’t heard, the state of New Jersey is broke. I, for one, am through being bilked, fleeced, lied to and rolled by everyone and everybody just because they have connections or hold a political office. It has to stop somewhere, sometime. Let it begin right here, right now. Gerard F. Keogh Jr. West Milford,
