“Look elsewhere to serve your interests”

To the Editor: Dear Former Councilman Dennis Kirwan: The word on the street is that you, Mr. Kirwan, have joined the Pequannock River Coalition. As someone who worked closely with you on Open Space issues, I’d like to comment on sharing membership with you again on an issue so dear to my heart. One wonders why would you would want to join, since your election platform began with building a golf course through two category-one streams and across hundreds of acres — right in the Pequannock River’s watershed. To my knowledge, you never attended any hearings for the horse farm, any event for the preservation of the Van Ness House, have offered no support for any of the causes championed by the Pequannock River, including the Pequannock River Greenbelt. In fact, you offered no public discussion at council for the property Ross Kushner said could be purchased for less than $15,000 of Open Space Tax Fund dollars. Also, you did not support the recently approved spillway pipeline project near Westbrook to improve the quality of the water temperature for the fish downstream. You also never attended, to my knowledge, any of the Watershed Management Area #3 meetings. I have never seen you at a clean-up event or one of the exploration hikes they have sponsored. But what concerns me most is that you were directly involved with the destruction of the West Milford Open Space Committee. The committee supported the Pequannock River Coalition’s objectives of preserving the water quality of this vital and compromised waterway — and you helped fire all the volunteers who served that committee while you were a councilman and their liaison. Finally, you opposed vehemently and on record the Highlands Act, which the coalition supports. Again and again you have spread misinformation about the Highlands Act. As a member of the Pequannock River Coalition, and as someone who has regularly supported their activities for a number of years, I question why you would want to join a group you have so openly worked against. Your track record speaks for itself. You are no conservationist, preservationist, or environmentalist, and for you to pay a few dollars to join a group who has dedicated themselves and their life’s work to the preservation and protection of one of West Milford’s most important water sources when you have openly fought what they stand for is hypocritical. Please reconsider your membership. I once told you that if the public knew of your position and record against the environment, you would be voted out of office, and you were. If you name appears as a member of this coalition in any capacity other than a one-time donation, the public will deserve to know the truth of your record, which speaks volumes about you. May I suggest you look elsewhere to serve your interests? Celeste Byrne Former member of the defunct West Milford Open Space Committee
