To the Editor: At the January West Milford Peace Action meeting, I was informed there is a military recruiting office in West Milford High School. The U.S. Military is aggressively recruiting students to fill ranks in the armed forces. Recruiters have access to student contact information (addresses, phone numbers, grades) slipped into President Bush’s “No Child Left Behind Act.” Parents opposed to military snooping may stop it. Any parent or student may submit a request to the principal in writing, stating the school is not to hand over any information to recruiters. Secondly, If recruiters speak in a school setting, peace groups must be given equal time. Students may also hand out anti-war or anti-recruiting materials in school. Recruiters lie. They do not want enlistees to know that many who sign up will never see the college money promised. Enlistment is for eight years, not two. Two of active service and six in the reserves, where you can be called into combat anytime. Unemployment is higher among young veterans than non-veterans. Lastly, more and more vets are speaking out against the Iraqi War as 2200 have died and 15,000 have become amputees. The current administration stands in front of troops for photo-ops, but do not provide troops with the proper armor or promised benefits.
