To the editor: The W. Milford primaries are important for both Democrats and Republicans. Although the Democratic Council candidates are not contested in this primary, West Milford voters should go to the polls to give them your support. James Geist and James Rauth are both smart and highly ethical West Milford residents. Both live here with their families because they care about the quality of life that a rural community offers. They are running for West Milford Council because they want to protect our rural community from high-density development (1) that would bring more children to our schools, which would further increase our property taxes, (2) that would deplete our scarce ground water supply, and (3) that would pollute our lakes, streams and wetlands. They would continue to pursue efforts to get a portion of the NJ water surcharge funds transferred to serve as tax relief for the NJ Highlands preservation areas like West Milford, which supply drinking water to millions of residents of Newark and other areas. Geist and Rauth deserve your votes on June 6. In addition, Democratic seats for the US Congress are contested. I’ve met both Camille Abate and Paul Aronsohn, and was impressed by both of them and have not yet decided where my vote will go. I suggest that West Milford residents check out their web sites: www.AbateForCongress.com and www.PaulAronsohn.com. I would be happy to have either of these fine candidates instead of the Republican incumbent, Scott Garrett. As a senior citizen, an NYU Professor, and an environmentalist, I have seen Scott Garrett vote against legislation that would be important (1) for seniors’ social security, and medicare benefits, (2) for providing federal funding for both public schools and colleges, and (3) for protecting our environment’s air, water and forests. If I were a registered West Milford Republican, I would support for Council the “Real Republicans,” Ada Erik and Rudolph “Dick” Nobis over the “Regular Republicans” Joe Smolinski and Sal Schimenti. The Regular Republican Council majority has a history of wasting our tax money and supporting high density housing projects that would degrade our Town. Their current candidates would likely do the same. Doris Aaronson West Milford
