Something fishy about “something fishy”

To the editor: 1 read Doris Aaronson’s February 16,2007 letter to the editor entitled “Something fishy going on.” I was one of those who testified at the January 10, 2007 Highlands Council Regional Draft Master Plan hearing. The meeting chair Highlands Council Member Tracy Carluccio, said, referring to the Planned Community/Specially Planned Area Zones (Purple blotches) “those areas were requested by the townships,” not “township.” One letter missing — an “s” — but it makes a big difference in the meaning behind the statement. There were many other residents and officials from other towns who testified against the zone designations. When the chair made that statement she was met with hostile calls from the audience, telling her that her comments were wrong. About a half-hour later she retracted her statement and said she had misspoken. Something conveniently left out of all public reporting to date about the incident. Is our West Milford Township MUA and Planning Department so powerful that they were able to convince the Highlands Council to put purple blotches around Erskine and Cupsaw Lakes in Ringwood and Highland Lakes in Vernon and other lakes throughout, Passaic, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon and Somerset counties? That is what Democrats in town want you to believe. How ridiculous! This continued assault on the MUA, the planning department, director and board must stop. The goal has to be to work together to change the Highlands Regional Draft Master Plan. The finger pointing and posturing to try and win future local elections cannot be part of the strategy to change the plan. Frank Hannan West Milford
