To the editor: In response to the heated debate on Belcher’s Creek and the performance of the MUA, I have an absolute solution to any pollution problem in West Milford. All traces of human habitation or interference must be eliminated! Of course there’s a real good chance that won’t happen for a while (but mankind is certainly on that trend) so West Milford residents have accepted a compromise regarding wastewater. Sewerage treatment plants and septic systems. Sewerage treatment plants and septic systems function properly most times and fail sometimes. I’ve learned that both have their supporters and critics regarding the treatment of wastewater and both are valid to a point. I have heard conclusions drawn as to the source (human or animal, septic or STP) of high fecal coliform, phosphorus and other test results, but cannot recall seeing any formal or court admissible test results submitted that prove any conclusion. Under a unanimous vote, the West Milford Environmental Commission began a course of action last year, funded through grants and in-kind-service, to conclusively find the sources of contamination through legally accepted testing. This project will then recommend (which is all we can do) corrective measures and begin a monitoring program for septic systems. In my opinion, this is not everything that can be done to alleviate the problem (see my opening statement) but this is the most vigorous attention to this issue I have seen so far and that’s the reason myself and the rest of the EC is committed to this. I would also like to remind you that this is not the only project the EC is working on. The real reason for my comments follow. For any volunteer to be chastised for this issue be it Doris, Les or especially Steve (a 25+ year volunteer who thoughtfully and innocently accepted the Chairmanship of the EC and membership on the MUA Board for the benefit of the environment) I come to the defense of their opinions. I believe the vast majority of their opinions and all of their past actions are truly in our best interest in one form or another. Like all of us, they have different ways to address their concerns, but at the core, we all benefit. Bernie Stapleton West Milford
