To the editor: I would like to comment on Democrat Chairman Andy Gargano’s recent” Clarification on story” letter to the Messenger. His contention that the committee that collected signatures for the West Milford Sunshine Act is bipartisan is a continuation of the public shell game Democrats like Mr. Gargano, Mr. Martin O’Shea (please notice he left out Mr. 0 Shea’s name) and council candidate Jim Geist have been playing with the public. The committee listed by Mr. Gargano, consisted of himself, a past local Democrat leader who has a job with the county, two current Democrat council candidates, a past leader and former Democrat council candidate, a loyal Democratic, a Democrat councilman and a Republican. The Republican is an active volunteer in the community but since according to an old posting on the Democrats Web-site, she recently hosted a rummage sale tor the Democrat candidates, she clearly is supporting the local Democrat Party. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these people’s support of this referendum but let’s not continue to mislead the public. This is just a continuation of the shell game that started with the flyer Democrats used to get their signatures out in front of Shop Rite. I invite the public to view the flyer on westmilfordsunshineact.com Compare the “no” answer on whether it will cost a lot of money to implement this act to the $311,000 cost our town administrator and clerk have projected. They conclude that the town will have to hire two new staff members. Ask yourself why the flyer did not include the provision that is in the act that requires the town to pay the lawyer’s fees of a successful litigant who sues the town. You got it; the taxpayer will pay the lawyer’s fees of the person who sued the town and the lawyer’s fees to defend the town. Both fees, taxpayer’s pay! Please read the act. What I have written here is just the tip of the iceberg on how this act will raise your taxes and destroy volunteerism in our town. Go to wmrepublican.org or njsunshinelaw.com to read the act in full. As for Mr. Gargano’s comment the “change in government has benefited only a handful of Republicans,” residents just need to look around town. Have you ever seen the county pave so many roads before? Finally, a few dollars back from the millions we send down county. What about the over $600,000 in federal grants we got this year from Congressman Garrett for Greenwood Lake and downtown improvements? Is it better to have local elections in May with 20 to 25 percent turnout or November with 50 to 60 percent turnout? As for benefiting only a few people, did you know that only about .003 percent (three one hundredths) of the population requested OPRA records from the town last year and the number one requester was Martin O’Shea the author of the Sunshine Act? About a month ago, Mr. Geist got up and front of the mayor and council and touted the Democrat proposal known as The West Milford Sunshine Act. This past week Mr. 0’ Shea, who wrote the act, said in his paid column in Aim “If you feel the need to blame somebody for it (meaning the Sunshine Act) blame me, not the club.” (Democrat Club) Now Mr. Gargano says it was a bipartisan effort but leaves Mr. O’Shea’s name off the list. The shell game continues, is the run for cover not far behind? Frank Hannan West Milford
