To the editor, The West Milford town council is going to get rid of the other dumb ordinance Marty O’Shea foisted upon our town. You all remember it, the West Milford Attorney Accountability Ordinance. That is the ordinance that Marty’ s pal John Paff wrote, and Marty Oshea sold to a bunch of council people being removed at the change in our form of government. On the outside it seemed like a very mundane, not a big deal type thing, which should have never cost the town a dime. Add to that concept John Paff, the author of the ordinance, and Marty, “give it to me or I’ll sue ya” O’Shea, and something that should have been a good thing went terribly wrong. They asked for a document that is considered privileged by the NJ Supreme court and by doing his job diligently, even to the amazement of a judge in Paterson, Mr. Byrnes withheld it. The judge went as far as praising Mr. Byrnes for his knowledge of the OPRA laws and found in his favor. Not willing to accept that, and wanting a pound of township flesh (including a big pile of tax dollars), Paff and O’Shea appealed the judge’s opinion and with very little opposition won their appeal. Why? Because the township did not want to fight the dumb decision and it was just easier to get rid of this dumb ordinance later. Why throw good money after bad? Now, it takes leadership to remove an ordinance that purports to be the ethically right thing to do. However, in this town with the cast of characters we have removal of this ordinance is just good self-defense. By removing it, we can no longer be sued over it. The nice guys who foisted this on us just cost us all over 65,000 dollars. That is two police cars or a huge pile of playground equipment. What was really the hot poker in the eye is, they did this, to get information they already had. They did it for fun. They were just testing the law they passed to see how far they could push it. Yep, just for fun, at the West Milford taxpayers’ of expense. Let’s tell Marty and his lawyer friends to go pound salt. We ain’t falling for the banana in the tail pipe ever again. I applaud Mayor DiDonato and Councilmen Weisbecker, Scangarello, Smolinski and Schimmenti for taking us out of harms way. Keep up the good work gentlemen. Harry Clark Upper Greenwood Lake
