To the Editor: I would like to publicly thank Passaic County Freeholder and West Milford resident, Terry Duffy, for accomplishing what no other state agency was able to do. Mr Duffy was able to negotiate the extension of a NJ Stars Scholarship for my daughter after we learned she was considered ineligible due to a chargback matter. She was greatly honored to have been a recipient last year and we were certain, due to her GPA and full-time status, that the scholarship would automatically be renewed this present school year. What ensued was five months’ worth of phone calls and letters to the two county colleges involved, the NJ Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, the Commission on Higher Education and the NJ Council of County Colleges. I received advice and support but despite finding the specific legislature that supported our argument, the above mentioned agencies had no authority to enforce compliance. As my last hope, I called Mr. Duffy’s office. I didn’t know if he would be able to become involved and I certainly knew he had much more important matters of concern. I was thrilled when he offered to have a meeting with the county college president who could provide the means by which my daughter could receive the extension. My family and I can not thank Mr. Duffy enough for arguing our case and persuading the college president to help us. I am honored, and most impressed, on what he accomplished on our behalf. His efforts and their success reflect highly on the office to which he was elected and as a Passaic County resident, for which I am most grateful. Seana K. Scognamiglio West Milford
