The importance of local elections

The recent board of education election illustrated the importance of participating in local elections. Many residents were dismayed to learn that the “fed up” campaign actually meant drastic cuts to the school budget, including closure of Paradise Knoll Elementary School. Most troubling was the arbitrary manner in which these cuts were proposed, as it appeared that very little planning or thought was given to proposed cuts of this magnitude. No one likes to hand over their hard-earned money to government, and seeking to cut government spending is an admirable goal. But at the same time, we need the services our municipality provides, from maintaining roads to providing police and fire protection. Whenever increases in spending, or decreases in spending are proposed, they should be fully disclosed to the public, and public opinion should always be considered. The money our governments spend is not their money, it is our money, therefore the public is always entitled to know how, when and where it is being spent. A great deal of responsibility comes with holding local public office. Property taxes, property values and the education of our children all are affected by decisions our local office holders make. As many people were reminded recently, taking the time to learn about candidates, and then participating by voting in elections, is vitally important to our town. If elected, I promise to do more listening than speaking, and will not be a rubber stamp. I will make my own decisions, and vote my conscience.
