Editor’s note: This letter refers to an opinion piece about an effort to name a hiking trail after Jeremy Glick, the West Milford resident who was aboard Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, and the subsequent discovery that New Jersey does not name trails after people. To the editor: The Tichenor House is probably one of the original homesteads in the Hewitt section of West Milford. It is possible that it carries a date of 1754. I have been working towards saving this house for some time and have established a group called The Friends of the Tichenor House, Inc., with the ultimate goal being preservation of this handsome house. It is currently owned by Passaic County and it is sitting on 200 acres of land, but the county expresses no real interest in the structure. The Township of West Milford does not own the premises and has done nothing to enforce the upkeep of the building. We certainly can not expect local taxpayer dollars to fund a restoration for a building that does not belong to them and one that has been allowed to deteriorate for two decades. So, we have a catch 22. Sadly, when and if it falls ... it will be shame on all of us. There was an “Our View” in the Sunday, April 2 edition of the Trends which was an inspiration for an idea. Here’s the deal. You help my effort to get the funds for emergency repairs to stabilize this dwelling .... and perhaps, together, we can suggest that the county use all or part of the building as a learning center to preserve our American history. The plan could include the founding pioneers, Underground Railroad, Appalachian Trail, etc., and whatever it takes to remember the true heroes along that path from the 1700s right up to today. Indeed, you were correct when you stated that Jeremy Click embodied the American Spirit. I, personally, don’t think that naming a dirt trail or a paved roadway is an appropriate way to honor the bravery of this fallen hero of American history. Let us find a special place in the Tichenor House. It is my understanding that this is the land where he hiked. Can you think of a more fitting place? All of us together should strive to preserve our America now. Elaine Young Duffy West Milford
