“To set the record straight”

To the editor: As we approach election day, I want to remind voters why Joseph Smolinski is on the West Milford Town Council. He wasn’t elected and he’s serving out Joseph Elcavage’s term. You remember Elcavage — he abruptly resigned when the council decided to investigate his possible involvement in the now defunct “Fleecing West Milford” Website. That Website was devoted to vicious personal attacks on Jim Warden and I, and was run by a group of anonymous cowards. At the town council meeting on September 13 my Republican colleagues turned the meeting into the Joe Smolinski show. Personally, I don’t think we should invite children to a council meeting to recognize their athletic accomplishments, and then use them as props for someone running for election in a partisan campaign. Councilman Smolinski recently sent in a letter to the newspapers trying to take credit for the Water Use Surcharge as a means of providing tax relief to West Milford. To set the record straight, again, I asked the council to adopt a resolution in support of the Water Use Surcharge, and that resolution was sent to the New Jersey League of Municipalities who considered it a good idea and adopted it as part of statewide legislation that they wanted to see approved. The legislation failed to garner support from any of our Republican legislators other than Senator Robert Martin. That is the reason why it wasn’t passed. The Water Use Surcharge will not happen until our Republican state legislators get behind the idea and fight for it. However, at the present time, they’re busy trying to repeal the Highlands Act.
