To the Editor: Newsday (May, 2005) reported on the need for inspired, talented, committed School Board Teams. When I read this report, I was certain that Michelle Fenwick would make for an excellent school board member. Newsday stated that each month, board members throughout our state hear parents and other citizens speaking up thoughtfully, making intelligent observations, offering ideas, raising critiques and encouraging more from their districts and board members. They manage multimillion-dollar budgets and deliberate serious issues at public meetings. They need to run with leadership, courage, and serve to set an example as inspiration to our children. The challenges are great. The financial burdens are real. Districts have control over only portions of the spending and must do so in light of the numerous fiscal responsibilities while promoting excellence in education. A persistently inequitable school-aid formula continues to exist. Unfunded mandates worsen budget pressures. Districts must meet new state standards that require more staff and resources without the necessary aid. Schools also confront increased health insurance and fuel costs. All while supporting student achievement and continuous improvement of our schools. West Milford children need the leadership and courage that Newsday speaks of; they need a strong board that will work as a team, with student’s best interests at the heart. I support Michelle Fenwick’s run for WMTPS School Boards. She has a deep understanding of these issues and would be an effective member who would take on these challenges and meet West Milford’s unique needs. David P. Fenwick West Milford
