To the editor: In a recent letter to the editor in Aim West Milford and Suburban Trends, Les Lynn criticized Doris Aaronson for her assertion that the West Milford MUA sewage treatment plants may be the reason for high coliform counts in Belcher’s Creek. Lynn wrote that Aaronson’s statements were “reckless at best and politics at its worst.” I have known Doris Aaronson for over 20 years and I have never thought of her as a political person. She has supported council candidates who she thought would best represent her views on the council. Most informed voters do the same. As far as her statements being “reckless,” Dr. Aaronson is a university professor with various degrees. She knows how to research information, collect data, and analyze the results. She has testified before the township council, the planning board, the Passaic County Freeholder Board, and the New Jersey DEP Dr. Aaronson’s dedication to our community and to the preservation of the environment has been recognized and honored by many area organizations. Just a few weeks ago she received a citation from the township council in grateful recognition of her volunteer help. On one hand, I am sadden by this controversy because I respect the past environmental work of both Les Lynn and Doris Aaronson. On the other hand, I am glad the controversy is highlighting the problems of Belcher’s Creek and publicizing the need to find the source (or sources) of contamination. Take a boat ride down the creek and you will see an abandoned beach area. About 25 years ago the children of Camp Hope were still using this beach to enjoy swimming in Belcher’s Creek. I don’t think too many of us would risk taking a dip in the creek now. Is the source of contamination individual home septics, malfunctioning sewage treatment plants, animal wastes, or a combination of these pollutants? I don’t know, but I hope that the township council, the Environmental Commission, the Greenwood Lake Commission, and individual residents like Doris Aaronson and Les Lynn will continue to focus on cleaning Belcher’s Creek. The recreational and financial potential of Greenwood Lake will not be realized until its major source is remedied. Carl Richko West Milford
