To the editor: It’s understandable that Jim Geist hasn’t gotten over the thrashing he and his running mate received in last November’s West Milford Council elections. Trying to remain politically viable, Geist has taken up the pen once again. And once again, I am responding. It took Geist five paragraphs in his letter “Ordinance shouldn’t be repealed” to get to what he really wanted to talk about. Tax relief is something we all want. However Geist needs to look south toward Trenton where members of his party control the governorship, the N.J. State Senate, and the N.J. Assembly. All controlled by Democrats. Does anyone reading this letter truly believe that the Democrats in Trenton are interested in lowering the taxes in West Milford? Quite the contrary. Assemblymen DeCroce and Pennacchio aren’t the ones that have to be convinced that we in West Milford are over burdened with taxes. Geist says we should be lobbying them. We should be lobbying the Democrats who control the power of taxation not the Republicans who are in favor of lowering them. In a recent article, Geist takes exception that he pays so much toward the West Milford school system in his real estate taxes. Is he implying that because he doesn’t have children, he shouldn’t have to pay school taxes? Well I pay my estate taxes plus I pay tuition to send my daughters to Our Lady Queen of Peace. What’s your point Jim? Let me remind you, your salary comes directly from taxes or have you forgotten? So cheer up! Instead of “throwing spears” at the mayor, or the newest member of the council or the town clerk (Boy, that’s a lot of spears!), try to come up with an issue that will resonate with the people of this town. I know it will be hard, but maybe the Democrats in Trenton can be of assistance. No wonder why you lost by 2000 votes. Think logically, act responsively. Gian P. Severini Hewitt
