To the Editor: I am writing in regards to the article about the largest bear killed during the hunt. I have been a hunter since I was 10. My hunting included black bear in Maine and deer. Over the years my ethics have changed and I began thinking about hunting in a different way. Although I still hunt one week a year in W.Va for deer with my dad, it is to spend some quality time with my dad, not bag a trophy. I was waiting to see the first article about who killed the biggest trophy bruin. Obviously, being a person who does not agree with the hunt, is there a possibility we can also print just the opposite of this story and print the statistics of the smallest (newborn/cub) to balance out this story? Or, as I am expecting, is this letter going to be thrown by the wayside because an article of this nature would not draw as much attention? If you do decide to print an article of this nature can you please include the hunters name (who bagged the smallest /youngest/most defenseless bear) so he to can be congratulated? Also, I have another point. Kids in my neighborhood get in a lot of trouble if caught riding an ATV on state land, so why is it legal to operate an ATV on state land to drag out a trophy? Isn’t this sending the wrong message to kids? One last word. When I was growing up, hunting it was a challenge. We did not use cell phones and friends to flush out the animal. This is the first time I am writing to a newspaper because I feel the truth about this hunt should be published not all of the bears killed were trophies, but also newborn cubs as well.
