Highlands Preserve: 22 Warwick Turnpike, West Milford, NJ
Considered one of New Jersey’s best-in-class hiking destinations. Six different hiking trails allow for panoramic views of Greenwood Lake. The preserve is adjacent to the Abram S. Hewitt State Forest. All hiking trails are labeled with different colors, and vary in difficulty levels. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Tranquility Ridge: Corner of Greenwood Lake Turnpike and Beech Road, Ringwood, NJ
More than 2,000-acre watershed protection area between Ringwood and West Milford, deeply forested with three marked hiking trails, birdwatching and natural landscapes. Trails include 0.8-mile Monks Connector, 1-mile Highland Trail, and 1.9-mile Hasenclever Iron Trail.
Wawayanda State Park: 885 Warwick Turnpike, Hewit, NJ
34,350-acre state park in Sussex and Passaic counties, Vernon and West Milford townships. Contains 60 miles of hiking trails, including 20 miles of the AT. Wawayanda Lake Loop is an easy, 6-mile loop along the lake.
Norvin Green State Forest: 150 Snake Den Rd., Ridgewood, NJ
Well-marked trails that are suitable for hikers with different difficulty levels. Diverse terrain and stunning views from the highest points. The Wyanokie Circular Loop is a 7.5-mile loop through forest and open ridges, and includes vistas and views of the New York City skyline.
Apshawa Preserve: 4 Northwood Dr., West Milford, NJ
576-acre preserve with miles of trails and a 43-acre reservoir. Nearly 7 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and fishing. The Green Loop, a 3.6-mile loop, is most popular. Other trails include the White, Red, Blue, and Yellow trails.
