VFW to celebrate 75th anniversary

West Milford. West Milford’s VFW Post 7198 celebrated its 75th anniversary with recognition from Mayor Michele Dale and highlighted local preservation efforts at the Wallisch Homestead, including recent restoration projects and plans for community use.

West Milford’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7198, chartered Dec. 9, 1950, will celebrate its 75th anniversary, honoring members who served in conflicts including the Korean War, Vietnam, Beirut, Kosovo, Afghanistan, the Philippines, and Iraq.

“In recognition of the contributions of the West Milford VFW Post do hereby express our deepest gratitude and appreciation,” Mayor Michele Dale said. “On behalf of the township governing body, and the entire community of the West Milford VFW Post 7198, for their service to their country and continued service to our veterans and our community at large. And do proclaim Dec. 9, 2025, as VFW Day throughout the Township of West Milford and I commend the observance to all of our citizens.”

The West Milford VFW then presented Mayor Michele Dale with their 75th Anniversary coin.

Wallisch Homestead

Susan Lynch, Founding Member and Treasurer of Friends of Wallisch Homestead (FOWH), spoke on their mission, to restore and preserve the property of the Wallisch brothers.

She also detailed how they are following their intentions for the property to be used by the public for “educational purposes and the preservation of the community and its environs” including use of “the Wallisch home and lands for . . . sports, wildlife, and recreational purposes” as stated on their website, Wallisch Homestead.

Their most recent project was the stabilization of the Red Timber Barn, where many events are hosted. Lynch requested funds from Open Space resources to extend the barns area to include an outdoor seating area.

Councilman Matthew P. Conlon stated,

“It’s just really nice to see what was once a dilapidated remnant of West Milford past become a vibrant part of West Milford present and future... I’m sure I speak on behalf of my colleagues,” Councilman Matthew P. Conlon said. “We appreciate your gratitude, but the gratitude really belongs with those who are doing the work day in and day out to facilitate the restoration and maintenance of the property... it’s something to be proud of.”
